5 Wonderful Ways Animals Say goodbye before they Die

Have you ever felt like your animal was trying to tell you something before they passed? Not the physical signs of fatigue or illness, but something deeper — a message shared through a glance, a touch, or a feeling that came over you out of nowhere?

After years of communicating with animals, both living and those who have crossed over, I’ve noticed the same patterns come up again and again. These aren’t things I’ve read in a book — they’re things animals themselves have shared with me, session after session. Below are five of the most common ways animals say goodbye, along with a few stories that have stayed with me, including one very close to my heart.

1. The Soul Gaze

This is one of the most powerful goodbyes, and if you’ve experienced it, you’ll know exactly what I mean. You’re going about your day — at home, outside, anywhere — and suddenly your eyes meet your animal’s. The world around you seems to disappear. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a room full of people; in that moment, it’s just the two of you.

Animals have told me that in these moments, they’re trying to say several things at once: that they love you deeply, that they’re grateful for the life you’ve given them, and that it’s almost time for them to go. As one animal put it to me, “If my parents really look back to that point, they’ll know — deep in their soul — that I was telling them I was ready.”

If you’ve felt this kind of locked-eye connection with an animal who later passed, that wasn’t your imagination. It was their goodbye.

2. A Trip Down Memory Lane

Many animals choose to say goodbye through memories — sending flashbacks of moments you shared together. It might be a trip you took, time spent with the family, or simply lying together on the couch.

What’s interesting is that these usually aren’t the memories you think about often. They tend to be moments you’d nearly forgotten — brought back specifically so you have something fresh to hold onto.

I once worked with a couple whose dog had crossed over, and during the session she kept sending images of a beach vacation the three of them had taken years earlier — swimming, ice cream, long walks on the sand. It clearly meant something to her. Touched by the message, her parents later returned to that same beach town and recreated parts of the trip in her memory. That one shared memory became a way to stay connected to her, even after she was gone.

3. Making Amends with animals & People

This one shows up often, and I’ve experienced it personally. As animals near the end, they sometimes go out of their way to repair relationships — with people or with other animals.

My childhood cat, Kitty, is the clearest example I know. We were incredibly close; she slept in my bed, followed me from room to room, and considered my belly her favorite napping spot. Two years after she came to live with us, we brought home a dog named Ludo. Kitty wanted nothing to do with that arrangement — and disappeared overnight. We never knew what happened to her.

Sixteen years later, she showed up at our front door and walked right in, as if she’d never left. She had come home to cross over with her family — to make amends, get the affection she’d missed, and say goodbye on her own terms. She passed two months later.

Every animal does this differently. Some clients have told me their pets suddenly became affectionate with a family member they’d never bonded with before. Others have seen two animals who’d disliked each other for years start to tolerate — even soften toward — one another in those final weeks. It’s rarely dramatic, but the shift is unmistakable.

4. A Burst of Love

As animals approach their final moments, they want to stay connected to you — even from another room. Some will stay glued to your side; others will want space, time alone. But in both cases, they keep sending you the same message: love.

You might be at work, or sitting at your computer, when out of nowhere you’re hit with an overwhelming wave of love — strong enough to bring you to tears. That’s not a random emotional moment. That’s your animal reaching across the distance to prepare you for what’s coming.

What they’re really saying is: thank you for being my person. Thank you for this life. Thank you for everything. It’s both a goodbye and a thank-you, wrapped into one powerful feeling.

5. The Heart-to-Heart Connection

The final way is one animals talk about often — and it can happen in the minutes, hours, or days before they cross over. In these moments, they want to be physically close to you. They might lean against your chest, lay a paw on your leg, or simply press their body against yours.

This closeness isn’t only for comfort in the moment — it’s a gift. Animals have told me they want to carry that physical memory with them into the afterlife, and they want to leave you with the same gift: a memory of intense closeness you can return to whenever you want to feel connected to them again. In that moment, your energies come together one last time.

Trust What You Felt

If you ever sensed your animal was saying goodbye — through a look, a memory, a sudden wave of love, or a moment of closeness — trust it. You didn’t imagine it. Your animal found a way to let you know, in whatever language the two of you shared.

Take a moment to think back to your own animal’s final days. What stood out to you? I’d love to hear your story — share it in the comments below.
